Frequently Asked Questions

Who is YPMC for?

The YPMC is for emerging young musicians who are looking to advance their careers in the music industry. There are no age limits, but musicians should consider themselves to be emerging professional musicians. Majority of YPMC members are current university students and recent music college graduates, though high-schoolers with strong musicianship and skill on their instrument have also been accepted to the program.

How do I audition?

The audition and application process to YPMC can be done simply online, and includes written statements about your musical experience, an audition video, a reference letter, and a statement of interest about why you want to join YPMC. Successful applicants may be invited to an in-person audition, or to participate in a trial rehearsal to see how they play with the ensemble.

Where is YPMC based?

YPMC is based in and solely operates out of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Though it was initially founded in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, it has since relocated to Calgary. The YPMC - Boston is considered a entirely separate organization, though it comes from the same roots.

Does it cost money to join the YPMC?

No! The YPMC believes in providing career development opportunities without financial barriers, which is why there are no application or registration fees.

Instead, YPMC members are simply required to perform in a YPMC event at least once per annual cycle, which provides the musician with performance experience while also helping YPMC fundraise through donations made by event attendees.

Do I need prior experience to join?

Yes, YPMC members must be strong and dedicated musicians. Though you are not expected to be at the level of a seasoned professional, we accept members who are clearly dedicated to their artistry and have potential to succeed in a musical career.

Ensemble performance experience, and specifically chamber ensemble experience, is preferred though not required. Acceptance to YPMC is based on the application/audition.

What is the time commitment?

Members are required to be at all scheduled rehearsals for performances they are included in. Each time YPMC has a performance planned, members are invited to see the rehearsal schedule and register to be a part of the event.

Generally, the YPMC rehearses once per week for each performance piece, though smaller ensembles may decide amongst their members, with supervision from the Artistic Director, if more or less rehearsals are needed.
